1. How should I talk with my clients about charitable giving?
For some advisers, this is difficult. The best way to help them is develop their interest and motivation for giving. Some questions to start with:
a. What has been your most satisfying charitable gift? Why?
b. Have you volunteered ? Which volunteer experience was most satisfying?
c. What role does philanthropy play in your family?

2. When does it make sense to suggest a charitable gift?
Charitable giving is a very personal decision. You can listen to your client and discover a variety of opportunities. Some of the best chances may come when the client is facing major business, personal or financial decisions; such as rewriting a will, contemplating the sale of a major asset, retirement planning or if they have received a significant windfall.

3. What are the tax benefits for my client?
Because of its status as a 501(c)3 public charity, gifts to the DCCF qualify for the maximum tax Benefit.

4. What is the minimum gift to start a fund?
The minimum gift for establishing a fund is $10,000. However, an Acorn Fund can be started with a gift of $2,000 per year until the $10,000 amount is reached.

5. I understand that community foundations build endowments. How do I explain an endowment to my client?
It is a permanent fund set up by an individual or organization through a written agreement between the donor and the Foundation. Gifts to the fund are invested. Investment income is used to make grants and scholarships to the community. The original value of the fund is not spent. All of the Foundation’s more than 90 endowment funds are pooled for investment purposes but each individual fund is accounted for separately.

INFORMATION FOR CHARITABLE BEQUEST

A specific dollar amount or may reserve the DCCF a certain percentage of an estate after providing for family and other beneficiaries. A donor may stipulate whether the bequest is for the support of the Decatur County Community Foundation’s unrestricted endowment fund or another specific fund at the Foundation.

The appropriate wording for making a gift depends on the type of gift, state law and donor’s circumstances. The following are examples of how the donor may designate a gift. Advise an attorney to be sure that the document is legal.

 

Unrestricted General Fund:

A. Specific dollar amount to the DCCF
“I hereby give __________ to the Decatur County Community Foundation , Inc., to be utilized by its Board of Directors in its sole discretion deemed appropriate.”

B. Percentage of an estate to the DCCF
“I hereby give _____ percentage of my residuary estate to the Decatur County Community Foundation, Inc., to be utilized by its Board of Directors in its sole discretion deemed appropriate.”

Amount for Designated Purpose

A. Specific dollar amount to the DCCF
“I hereby give the sum of _____ to the ____________Fund at the Decatur County Community Foundation, Inc.”

B. Percentage of an estate to the DCCF
“I hereby give ____ percent age of my residuary estate to the ______ Fund at the Decatur County Community Foundation.”
