Arnold D. Ducanes, M.D. Scholarship
Arnold D. Ducanes was born on May, 12, 1924 in Panitan, a municipality within the province of Capiz, Philippines. Arnold graduated from the University of San Agustin, in Iloilo, Philippines, in 1949 and then received his M.D. from the University of Santo Thomas, in Manila, Philippines, in 1954. He entered his residency as a M.D. at the North General Hospital, also in Manila, Philippines, where he worked for two years. Shortly after, Arnold taught Dentistry and Pharmacy at two different universities within the Philippines for a year or so (1957-1958). At this time was when Arnold came to the United States. He worked as a surgical assistant from 1958 until 1966 in places such as Seattle, Washington, Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania , and Chicago Illinois. During these years as a surgical assistant, Arnold met his wife Marita, and they would soon be married on July 31, 1963. Arnold and Marita have five children together, whom have given them nine grand children and nine great grand children! It was finally in 1967 that Arnold and his family became a part of the Decatur County community. Arnold started a private practice in Greensburg that he ran from 1967 until 2002. During his great time, as he said, in Decatur County, he was also the emergency room physician, Chief of Staff, Staff President, and a board member at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital. After being a part of our community for quite some time, Arnold and his family felt it was their time to give something back to their community in a very direct way. “Greensburg has always been good to my family”, Arnold explained to me. So with that in mind, Arnold and his family created the Arnold D. Ducanes, M.D. Scholarship to help support a Greensburg Community High School graduating senior in continuing their education in the health field. Arnold, now eighty-seven years old, currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife Marita.
