“If you want to touch the past, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch a life.”

I love inspirational quotes, and this one really hit me. Those of you who have entrusted your dollars to your local Decatur County Community Foundation have touched the future. And, you will continue to do so long after we’re all dust. Actually, with the variety of ways that the foundation gives grants, you’re also helping preserve the past and are making present-day Greensburg and Decatur County better as well.

If you’ve got a high school student thinking about college, there are around 80 scholarships available through the foundation. The application period will run from January 1 – February 1 and is online. Your student will receive a magnet on their locker right before Christmas break to remind them to go online and apply. Talk about touching the future! Helping our young people get the funding they need for higher education is just one way that donors to the Decatur County Community Foundation are lending a hand to our best and brightest.

We will be hosting our second “trades event” sometime early next spring. We’re already forming a committee and if you are interested in helping or have ideas on how we can improve it, we’d love to hear from you. We want to have local trades represented that can talk to these students about what is required in your particular field. What sort of classes in high school would help them if they are just planning on graduating and going straight into a trade? We want those who aren’t intending on going to traditional college to know that there is a fine living to be made by using your hands. The trades are a noble occupation and are so needed. We want to help steer some of our graduates towards that avenue. This year, we’d like to market the trades event to those who are already out of school that might be feeling a bit lost. This could help give direction. Anyone interested in representing a trade is encouraged to contact us at 812-662-6364 or to email us at info@dccfound.org or just stop by and see us sometime!
